Should you choose architectural shingles or a metal roof?
Cost
Metal costs considerably more installed, especially standing seam with concealed fasteners. Exposed fastener panels are cheaper but bring more long-term maintenance. Architectural shingles remain the budget-friendly choice on most Georgia homes.
Lifespan and upkeep
- Architectural shingles: roughly 20 to 30 years, shortened by heat, poor ventilation and storms.
- Standing seam metal: often 40 years or more with a quality paint finish.
- Exposed fastener metal: the panels last, but the rubber washers on the screws age and need attention over time.
Storms
Well-fastened metal performs strongly in wind. Hail is different: metal rarely leaks after hail, but it dents, and some policies treat dents that do not affect function as cosmetic and exclude them. Shingles bruise and lose granules, which is usually treated as functional damage. Read your policy before choosing.
Heat, noise and looks
Light or reflective metal finishes keep the surface cooler, though attic ventilation still matters under either roof. Installed over solid decking and underlayment, metal is not much louder in rain than shingles. Metal suits farmhouse and modern styles; some HOAs restrict it.
Repairs
A few shingles are simple to replace. Metal repairs require the same panel profile and color, which can be hard to source years later.
The bottom line
Staying 20 years or more and wanting fewer replacements, metal can win on cost per year. Selling within a decade, or on a budget, architectural shingles usually win. See metal roofing in Georgia, and Robust Roofing's metal vs shingle comparison lays out the trade-offs side by side.
