What happened to GAF Timberline HD shingles?
What changed with HDZ
- LayerLock: GAF's construction that bonds the shingle layers together at the nailing area.
- StrikeZone nailing area: GAF says it is up to 600 percent wider than on Timberline HD, for more accurate nailing.
- Wind coverage: eligibility for GAF's WindProven wind warranty when installed with required GAF accessories.
- Algae: StainGuard Plus algae protection with a longer algae warranty on packages carrying that logo.
- Impact: GAF now rates HDZ UL 2218 Class 3 on packages bearing that statement.
Repairs on an HD roof
HDZ was designed as the replacement, and many of the classic color names carried over, such as Charcoal, Weathered Wood and Pewter Gray. For a repair, compare the wrapper dimensions and exposure with the existing shingles, and expect the new pieces to look brighter until they weather. Leftover HD bundles from the original job, if you have them, match best.
Storm damage to an HD roof
When a storm damages part of an older HD roof, whether new HDZ shingles blend acceptably can become a question in the claim. Photograph the roof, keep the product name handy, and know what your policy says about matching.
How old is your HD roof?
Any Timberline HD roof was installed before HDZ took over, so most are now well into their service life. In Georgia's heat, architectural roofs commonly last about 20 to 30 years. Check its condition with signs you need a new roof, and see roofing warranties explained for what may still be covered.
