What do you need to do to keep a GAF Timberline HDZ shingles warranty valid?
What the coverage is
The standard warranty covers manufacturing defects, with an initial non-prorated period followed by prorated coverage. "Lifetime" applies to individual owners of single-family homes; other owners get a fixed term. WindProven depends on HDZ's LayerLock design plus the qualifying GAF accessories. Enhanced system warranties, registered by GAF certified contractors, extend the non-prorated period.
Steps that keep it valid
- Keep the paperwork. An invoice naming Timberline HDZ, the accessories used, the installation date and the address.
- Confirm the accessories. WindProven needs the specific GAF components; a roof finished with off-brand starter or ridge cap does not qualify.
- Ventilate properly. Like most shingle warranties, GAF's excludes problems caused by inadequate attic ventilation.
- Follow installation instructions. Nailing, starter placement and low-slope details matter. Installation errors are not manufacturing defects.
- Get enhanced coverage registered. If your contractor offers a GAF system warranty, ask for the registration certificate.
- Ask before treating the roof. Check GAF's position before applying aftermarket coatings or cleaners.
When you sell
The warranty can usually be transferred once, with written notice to GAF within the deadline the warranty states. Hand the documents to the buyer.
What it never covers
Hail and storm damage are insurance matters, and installation mistakes fall to the contractor's workmanship warranty. Robust Roofing, a GAF certified installer, adds a 50-year labor warranty on workmanship. See roofing warranties explained and roof ventilation basics.
