Georgia Roof Guide

Are there GAF Timberline metal shingles?

Short answer. No. GAF Timberline shingles are laminated asphalt shingles built on a fiberglass mat and surfaced with mineral granules; there is no metal version of Timberline. The metal on a Timberline roof is the drip edge, flashing and vent hardware, and if you want an actual metal roof you are comparing a different product category.

What a Timberline shingle is made of

A fiberglass mat gives the shingle its strength, asphalt waterproofs it, and ceramic-coated mineral granules on top block UV light and provide the color. Two layers are laminated together for thickness and shadow lines. Some confusion comes from the look: the shadow lines imitate wood shakes, and dark colors can resemble stone-coated steel from the street.

These parts should be corrosion resistant and color matched to the shingles or trim.

If you actually want metal

Metal roofing comes as standing seam panels, exposed-fastener rib panels, and metal shingles or stone-coated steel that mimic shakes or tile. The residential code requires a slope of at least 3 in 12 for metal roof shingles. Metal costs more up front and lasts longer. Hail dents metal, and many policies now carry cosmetic damage exclusions for metal roofs, so read yours before deciding.

A middle path

If durability is the goal, an impact-rated Timberline such as UHDZ with UltraMat, Class 4 on labeled packages, gives some of metal's hail resistance at shingle pricing. Compare both in metal roofing in Georgia and impact-resistant shingles in Georgia.
