GAF Timberline vs IKO Dynasty: how do they compare?
Nailing zone designs
Dynasty uses IKO's ArmourZone, a reinforced band in the nailing area that IKO describes as tear resistant and wider than standard architectural shingles. HDZ uses GAF's StrikeZone with LayerLock, which fuses the two layers where nails go. Both target the same problem: nails that miss the double-layer area are a leading cause of shingles sliding and blowing off.
Wind and impact
- Wind: IKO lists a 130 mph limited wind warranty for Dynasty installed with four nails. GAF's WindProven warranty for HDZ has no maximum wind speed but requires qualifying GAF starter, ridge cap and other accessories.
- Impact: both carry UL 2218 Class 3, and both makers say the rating is not a guarantee against hail, which their limited warranties exclude.
Algae and warranty fine print
Algae warranty lengths differ, change over time, and apply only to packages carrying the algae-resistant labeling. Compare the current documents, along with the non-prorated period and transfer rules, rather than a brochure summary.
Georgia practicalities
Which brand your local supply houses stock affects color choice, lead time and how easily you can find matching shingles for repairs years later. Many insurer discount programs are written around Class 4, so neither Class 3 shingle is likely to earn a credit on its own. Ask your agent.
