Can GAF Timberline Weathered Wood shingles be matched on an existing roof?
Short answer. Often not perfectly. Even when the product line and color name match, new Timberline Weathered Wood shingles will usually look different next to shingles that have weathered for years, and older Timberline lines have been replaced by newer ones. For a few shingles on a back slope that may be acceptable; for a visible slope or a storm claim, the mismatch is a real issue to raise.
Why new and old do not match
- Weathering. Sun and rain fade granule colors and wash off surface grime unevenly over the years.
- Product changes. Timberline has gone through several generations, and shingle dimensions, shadow lines and granule blends change between them.
- Production lots. Even new shingles vary slightly between runs.
How to identify what you have
Look for a leftover bundle wrapper in the attic or garage, the original invoice, or a warranty registration. A roofer can compare exposure, size and shadow line to tell an older Timberline generation from the current HDZ. Knowing the exact product helps with any repair or claim.
Repairs on an older Weathered Wood roof
- Use the closest current product and color, and place replacement shingles on less visible slopes when possible.
- Sometimes shingles from a hidden area, like behind a chimney, are swapped to a visible spot and the new ones go in the hidden area.
- Expect the new shingles to blend better as they weather, but not to disappear.
Storm claims and matching
When hail or wind damages part of a roof and the replacement shingles cannot reasonably match, how the claim handles it depends on your policy and the facts. The issue is covered in partial roof replacement and matching. For color choices on a full replacement, see the best shingle colors for Georgia heat.
