Gutter guards vs no gutter guards: which is better?

Short answer. With good guards, you trade an upfront cost for far fewer cleanings and clogged downspouts, plus an occasional brush-off; without guards, you pay nothing upfront but need regular cleanings, typically two to four a year under Georgia trees, and you risk overflow whenever you fall behind. Which is better depends mostly on your tree cover, roof height and how reliably the cleanings actually happen.

Running the numbers for your house

Add up what you pay, or what your time and risk are worth, for cleanings over ten years, then compare that with installed guards plus a light yearly brush-off. Under heavy pines and oaks on a two-story house, guards usually win. On a one-story house on an open lot where cleaning takes an hour, they often do not.

Middle ground

Some owners guard only the runs under the worst trees, or only the second-story gutters that are dangerous to reach, and leave the easy runs open. That captures most of the benefit for a fraction of the cost. For debris specifics, see pine needles and leaves on the roof, and for sizing, gutter sizing and guards.
