How much do shingles cost for a roof?
Short answer. Shingle prices depend on the product line and the size of your roof, but the shingles are only one item on a roof's materials list: starter strip, hip and ridge cap, underlayment, ice and water barrier, drip edge, flashing, pipe boots, vents and nails all go on the bill too. Materials together make up only part of a replacement price, with labor, tear-off, disposal and permits making up the rest.
The complete materials list
- Field shingles. Ordered by the square, usually three bundles per square for architectural lines, plus waste.
- Starter strip. A dedicated product along the eaves and rakes with a sealant line that locks down the first course.
- Hip and ridge cap. Thicker, pre-bent or pre-cut pieces for hips and ridges, bought by the linear foot of hip and ridge.
- Underlayment. Synthetic or felt rolls covering the whole deck.
- Ice and water barrier. Self-adhered membrane for valleys, walls, chimneys and eaves where required.
- Drip edge. Metal for every eave and rake.
- Flashing. Step flashing for walls, counterflashing for chimneys, valley metal where used.
- Pipe boots. Replacements for plumbing vent flashings, whose rubber collars crack in Georgia sun.
- Ventilation. Ridge vent, box vents or intake vents.
- Fasteners and sealant. Roofing nails, cap nails for underlayment and compatible sealant.
- Decking. Replacement sheets as needed.
Why matching accessories matter
Manufacturers design starter, ridge cap, underlayment and ventilation to work with their shingles. Using qualifying accessories from the same manufacturer, installed by a certified contractor, is what unlocks enhanced system warranties and, for some lines, stronger wind coverage. A quote that lists the shingle but leaves accessories generic is worth questioning.
Buying shingles yourself
Homeowners sometimes price shingles at a home center and compare that with a roofer's quote. The gap is labor, tear-off, disposal, accessories, insurance, warranty and the roofer's overhead.
