How much do shingles cost?
Short answer. Shingles are sold by the bundle and figured by the square, 100 square feet, which most architectural shingles cover with three bundles; three-tab shingles cost the least, architectural shingles somewhat more, and designer and impact-resistant lines the most. On a full roof the shingles are only part of the bill, alongside underlayment, accessories, tear-off and labor, which is why a typical North Georgia replacement runs roughly $8,000 to $16,000.
The price tiers
- Three-tab. Flat, single-layer shingles. The cheapest, but many manufacturers have narrowed or dropped their three-tab lines, and they carry shorter warranties and lower wind ratings.
- Architectural or laminated. Two bonded layers for a dimensional look. The standard choice on Georgia homes today.
- Impact-resistant. Class 4 rated lines built to resist hail. They cost more and may earn an insurance discount, depending on your insurer.
- Designer. Heavier shingles that imitate slate or shake. The most expensive asphalt option.
How quantity is figured
Roofers measure the roof in squares and add waste for cuts, more on roofs with many hips and valleys. Bundle prices vary by line, color, supplier and season, so check a current local quote.
Everything else on the material bill
- Starter strip and hip and ridge caps.
- Synthetic underlayment, plus ice and water barrier in valleys and around penetrations.
- Drip edge, flashing, pipe boots and vents.
- Nails.
Buying a few bundles for repairs
Match the manufacturer, line and color, and expect new shingles to look different from weathered ones. Discontinued colors are common on roofs more than a decade old. See architectural vs 3-tab shingles, impact-resistant shingles in Georgia and roof replacement cost in Georgia.
