Georgia Roof Guide

How do you fit soffits, and what is the right way to install soffit panels?

Short answer. Soffit panels are fitted by fastening receiving channels along the wall and at the fascia, cutting each panel slightly shorter than the opening to allow for expansion, sliding it into the channels, and nailing it loosely through the center of the nailing slots. Vented panels go wherever the attic needs intake air, and corners are handled with angled channels.

Tools and materials

Fitting the panels

  1. Prepare the base: confirm the fascia is straight and sound and that there is nailing surface at the wall and fascia. If covering old wood soffit, cut openings in it wherever vented panels will go.
  2. Install the channels: fasten J-channel or F-channel level along the wall and at the fascia side, keeping them parallel.
  3. Measure each bay: measure from channel to channel and cut the panel about 1/4 inch shorter to allow expansion.
  4. Insert the panels: flex the panel slightly to slip both ends into the channels, then lock each panel into the one before it.
  5. Fasten loosely: nail through the center of the slot, leaving a small gap under the nail head so the vinyl can move. Tight nailing causes buckling in Georgia heat.
  6. Handle corners: run channels at 45 degrees where two soffits meet, and cut panels to fit the angle.
  7. Finish the fascia: install fascia cover or bent aluminum coil that laps over the soffit edge.

Ventilation checks

Use enough vented panels to supply the attic's intake requirement, spread along the eaves. From inside the attic, confirm air can pass from the soffit into the rafter bays, and install baffles so insulation does not block it.

Around the roof edge

Soffit and fascia last longest when water stays off them. Drip edge at the roof edge and properly sized gutters keep runoff from soaking the fascia. See drip edge explained and gutter sizing, seamless gutters, and guards.
