How do you calculate roof square footage using the pitch?
Short answer. Multiply the roof's flat footprint area, including overhangs, by the pitch factor for its slope, then divide by 100 to get roofing squares. A 2,000 square foot footprint at 6/12 (factor 1.118) is about 2,236 square feet, or 22.4 squares, before a waste allowance.
Step by step
- Measure the footprint of the roof from the outside edges of the overhangs, not the house walls. Overhangs often add 1 to 2 feet on each side.
- Split by pitch if sections differ, such as a steep main roof and a low porch.
- Multiply each section by its pitch factor: 4/12 is 1.054, 6/12 is 1.118, 8/12 is 1.202, 10/12 is 1.302, 12/12 is 1.414.
- Add the sections and divide by 100 for squares.
- Add waste, commonly around 10 percent for simple gable roofs and more for hip and cut up roofs with many valleys.
Worked example
- House footprint with overhangs: 50 by 36 feet = 1,800 square feet at 8/12: 1,800 × 1.202 = 2,164 square feet.
- Porch: 20 by 10 feet = 200 square feet at 4/12: 200 × 1.054 = 211 square feet.
- Total: 2,375 square feet = 23.75 squares.
- With 12 percent waste: about 26.6 squares, ordered as 27.
Why your number may not match an estimate
- Estimates may add starter, ridge cap and hip cap as separate line items.
- Dormers and complex intersections add area and waste.
- Insurance estimates follow their own waste conventions.
Turning squares into cost
Squares are only part of price; pitch, layers to tear off, decking and access matter too. For honest Georgia ranges, see roof replacement cost in Georgia, and for professional methods, how roofers measure a roof.
