What size fascia board do you use for 2x4 rafters?
Short answer. A 1x6 fascia, which is 5 1/2 inches wide, is the usual choice for 2x4 rafters or truss tails. A 2x4's plumb cut runs about 3 3/4 to 5 inches tall depending on pitch, so a 1x6 covers it with room to lap the soffit edge; use a 1x8 only if the soffit hangs well below the tails or the pitch is very steep.
Plumb cut height on a 2x4 by pitch
A 2x4 is 3 1/2 inches deep. Cut vertically at the roof's angle, its face gets taller:
- 4/12: about 3 11/16 inches
- 6/12: about 3 15/16 inches
- 8/12: about 4 3/16 inches
- 12/12: about 4 15/16 inches
A 1x6 is 5 1/2 inches, which covers all of these and leaves room for the bottom lip that hides the soffit.
Why 2x4s matter in Georgia homes
Most houses built in recent decades use engineered roof trusses, and their top chords, which form the overhang, are very often 2x4s. That is why so many Georgia subdivisions have 1x6 fascia under aluminum wrap.
When to go bigger
- Dropped soffit: if the soffit is framed below the tail on a ledger, the fascia may need to be taller to close the gap.
- Matching existing trim: on an addition, match the house even if a 1x6 would work.
- Heavy gutters: consider a 2x sub-fascia behind the finish board for stronger gutter fastening.
Installation checks
- Set the top edge so the drip edge laps over it without a gap.
- Use corrosion resistant fasteners into every tail.
- Prime all sides and the end grain of wood boards before installing.
