Is GAF Timberline AS II still sold, and when does it make sense?
Short answer. Yes. GAF still lists Timberline AS II (ArmorShield II) as its SBS modified asphalt shingle that passes UL 2218 Class 4 on packages bearing that statement. It makes sense when you want Class 4 with the familiar Timberline look, especially if your insurer discounts Class 4 roofs or UHDZ with UltraMat is not stocked locally.
What makes AS II different
- SBS modified asphalt: a rubberized asphalt that flexes under impact instead of cracking.
- Class 4 impact rating: on packages carrying the UL 2218 Class 4 statement.
- Flatter in cool weather: GAF says AS II lays flatter than its standard shingle in temperatures of 40 degrees and up, which helps winter installs.
- Algae warranty: 25-year StainGuard Plus on packages with that logo.
- Wind warranty: eligible for the 15-year WindProven warranty with no maximum wind speed when installed with GAF starter strips, roof deck protection, ridge caps, and leak barrier or attic ventilation.
Specs
Nominal 13 1/4 by 39 3/8 inches with a 5 5/8 inch exposure, 64 pieces and 3 bundles per square, four nails per shingle for 256 per square. Class A fire rated and wind rated to ASTM D7158 Class H and D3161 Class F.
AS II or UHDZ for Class 4
- AS II: Class 4 by flexible asphalt, standard Timberline thickness, fewer colors.
- UHDZ with UltraMat: Class 4 by a reinforced mat, a thicker dual shadow line look, and a 30-year algae warranty on labeled packages.
Availability of each, and colors, varies by supplier, so price both if Class 4 is your goal.
Hail reality
GAF does not warrant AS II against hail damage. Class 4 improves the odds against moderate hail, and some insurers offer discounts for it, so ask your agent what documentation they need. Read impact-resistant shingles in Georgia and Georgia hail season.
