Georgia Roof Guide

Are GAF Timberline NS shingles any good?

Short answer. Yes, Timberline NS is a solid entry-level architectural shingle: a laminated, Class A fire-rated GAF shingle with a lifetime limited warranty and a classic, even-toned look at a lower price than HDZ. Its trade-offs are real, though: no LayerLock construction, no WindProven wind warranty eligibility, a shorter algae warranty and no impact rating, so most long-term owners are better served by HDZ.

What GAF Timberline shingles are

Timberline is GAF's family of laminated architectural shingles, running from NS at the value end through HDZ to the premium UHDZ, plus specialty versions. NS sits at the bottom of the price ladder but is still a true two-layer architectural shingle, a clear step up from 3-tab.

Where NS does well

Where it trails

Who should buy it

NS fits rentals, homes being sold within a few years, and budget-driven replacements. If you plan to stay ten years or more, the modest extra for HDZ is usually worth it for the algae and wind coverage alone. Whatever the shingle, installation quality decides how long it lasts.
