What happened to GAF Timberline Ultra HD shingles?
What Ultra HD was
Ultra HD sat above Timberline HD in GAF's lineup: a thicker laminated shingle with a dual shadow line meant to look like heavy wood shakes. It was a common premium upgrade on Georgia reroofs for years.
What changed with UHDZ
- LayerLock: the layers are mechanically fused along the common bond.
- StrikeZone: a wider nailing area, which reduces the chance of nails missing the double layer.
- Warranty terms: WindProven wind warranty eligibility with qualifying accessories and a 30-year algae warranty on StainGuard Plus PRO labeled packages.
- Impact: GAF later reworked UHDZ with its UltraMat mat, and packages bearing the UltraMat logo are Class 4. Do not assume an Ultra HD roof carries any impact rating unless its wrapper or invoice says so.
Repairs on an Ultra HD roof
Look for leftover bundles first. Otherwise, UHDZ in the same color name is the closest match available, but compare thickness and exposure on a sample before installing. New granules look brighter until they weather, so place repairs where they show least.
Storm damage
When hail or wind damages part of an Ultra HD roof, whether new UHDZ pieces blend acceptably becomes part of the claim conversation. Photograph the roof, find the original invoice, and note the color name.
How much life is left?
Premium thickness helps, but Georgia heat still sets the clock. Ultra HD roofs installed 15 or more years ago deserve a close look for granule loss, cracking and lifted tabs, and pipe boots on roofs that age often need attention first. See signs you need a new roof and roofing warranties explained.
