Georgia Roof Guide

How much do impact resistant shingles cost?

Short answer. Impact-resistant Class 4 shingles cost more than standard architectural shingles, and on a full roof the premium is usually a meaningful but not dramatic share of the total, because labor, tear-off and accessories cost about the same either way. Whether the premium pays back depends on any insurance discount you qualify for and how often hail hits your area.

Why the material costs more

Most Class 4 shingles use polymer-modified asphalt, often called SBS modified or rubberized, which stays flexible and absorbs impact instead of cracking. Others use reinforced backing. Both cost more to make than standard laminated shingles, and the premium varies by manufacturer and line.

Keep expectations honest

Class 4 means the shingle passed the UL 2218 test with 2-inch steel balls. Large or wind-driven hail can still damage it, and a cosmetic damage exclusion on your policy can affect coverage.
