How much more do architectural shingles cost than three-tab?
Why the premium shrinks on a full roof
Shingles are only one part of a replacement. Tear-off, disposal, underlayment, ice barrier, drip edge, flashing, vents, labor and permit stay roughly the same whichever shingle goes on. So a meaningful difference in bundle price becomes a much smaller difference in the total. In North Georgia, a typical architectural shingle replacement runs roughly $8,000 to $16,000.
What the extra money buys
- Thicker, heavier shingles made of two laminated layers, which hold up better to Georgia heat and storms.
- Higher wind ratings than most three-tab products when installed to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Longer manufacturer warranties. Architectural lines usually carry the maker's top standard warranty.
- A dimensional look that hides minor deck irregularities and helps curb appeal and resale.
- Easier future repairs. Current architectural lines are easier to find than discontinued three-tab colors.
Is three-tab still worth considering?
For a detached shed or a rental where the lowest first cost matters most, maybe. For a primary home, the small difference in total cost rarely justifies a shingle with a shorter life, a lower wind rating and fewer color choices.
On insurance claims
Claims are settled for like kind and quality. When matching three-tab is no longer available, how the replacement is priced depends on the carrier and policy, so ask your roofer to document what is on the roof. See architectural vs 3-tab shingles and roof replacement cost in Georgia.
