How do you repair vinyl or aluminum soffit panels?

Short answer. Damaged vinyl or aluminum soffit panels are usually replaced individually: loosen the fascia trim or channel, slide the damaged panel out, and slide in a matching new one. Blown out panels can often be reseated and fastened, sagging is fixed by adding support and fasteners, and small animal holes get a screened patch or a new panel.

Replacing a damaged panel

  1. Buy a matching panel: same material, color, width and vent pattern. Take a piece to the supplier if you can.
  2. Gently pry back the fascia trim or the lip of the channel where the panel meets the fascia.
  3. Pull the damaged panel out of the wall channel and slide it free. Tight runs may require cutting the old panel down the middle to remove it.
  4. Cut the new panel to length, leaving a small gap for expansion.
  5. Slide it into the wall channel, lock it to its neighbors, and fasten it at the fascia end.
  6. Reseat the fascia trim.

Panels that blew out in a storm

If the panels are not bent, slide them back in and add a few fasteners at the fascia edge. Bent or cracked panels should be replaced. If several came loose, the channels may need more fastening, and the storm may have damaged the roof too.

Sagging panels

Long spans without support sag in summer heat. Add nailing strips across the soffit framing and fasten loosely enough for vinyl to move.

Animal holes

Confirm the animal is gone, then replace the panel or cover the hole with metal and a screened vent. Find the gap at the roof edge they used too.

Keep it vented

Replace vented panels with vented panels. The soffit is the attic's intake. See roof ventilation basics and wind damage to roofs in Georgia.
