What should an example roof warranty claim letter say?
Who gets the letter
- Leaks at flashing, pipes, walls or valleys on a newer roof are usually workmanship, so write the installer.
- Shingles cracking, blistering or losing granules without a storm may be a product issue, so write the manufacturer and copy the installer.
- Damage after a storm is an insurance matter, not a warranty claim.
Example letter
Re: Warranty claim, [property address], roof installed [date], invoice or warranty number [number].
On [date] I found [describe the problem, for example a ceiling stain below the chimney after rain on (date)]. Photos are attached showing the interior damage and the roof area above it. The roof was installed by [company] using [shingle brand and line]. I am requesting an inspection and repair under the warranty. Please contact me by [date] at [phone and email] to schedule. I have placed a tarp to prevent further damage.
Details that speed things up
- Clear photos from inside and outside, with a wide shot and close ups.
- The exact date you noticed the problem, since many warranties require notice within a set time.
- Your proof of purchase and any registration number.
- Notes on what you did to limit damage.
If nobody answers
Follow up in writing and keep a log of calls. If the installer is gone, go straight to the manufacturer. If you suspect a leak source but are not sure, read common roof leak causes, and for coverage terms, roofing warranties explained.
