What does SG mean on GAF Timberline HDZ shingles?
Why the tag exists
Suppliers use short codes to tell product versions apart on invoices and shelf labels. GAF has sold shingles with and without algae-resistant granules in different markets, so a code like SG helps a supply yard pull the right pallet. On a quote or invoice it should read as Timberline HDZ, the color, and the algae protection version.
What StainGuard does
The black streaks on so many Georgia roofs are a blue-green algae that thrives in humid shade and feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. Algae-resistant shingles mix in granules that slowly release copper, which discourages growth across the surface. GAF's StainGuard Plus protection on Timberline HDZ carries a 25-year limited algae warranty, but only on packages bearing the StainGuard Plus logo.
How to confirm what you got
- Ask that the quote name the exact product and algae protection version.
- Keep one wrapper from the job, or photograph the bundle labels on delivery day.
- Check that the invoice line matches the wrapper.
Does it matter here?
Yes, more than in drier parts of the country. North and east slopes under hardwoods or pines in North Georgia often streak within a few years without copper protection. Algae is mostly cosmetic and rarely shortens shingle life, but it is hard to remove safely, so prevention is the better deal.
